Arts WordPress Theme Development

A Fresh Approach to a Half-Completed Build

Valle Walkley is an award-winning graphic design studio based in South East London, specialising in book design for contemporary art. They initially approached me to debug and complete a partially built WordPress theme, but after assessing the code, I opted to rebuild the site from scratch, creating a fully bespoke theme.

Unconventional Design Meets Usability

Known for their distinctive and unconventional approach to design, Valle Walkley wanted their website to embody the same spirit. The centrepiece of the site is a unique navigation system inspired by index cards within a wallet—functioning as both a menu and a container for project content. The challenge was to execute this concept with pixel-perfect precision while ensuring usability, particularly on mobile devices where space is limited.

A lot of work went into balancing the written content with the images, especially on mobile.

Advanced Development for a Seamless Experience

Highlights of the project for me were refining the card index navigation UI and implementing AJAX on the archive pages. This allowed for live database querying while maintaining unique URLs for each archive category, preserving both functionality and SEO best practices.

Working with Valle Walkley was a really rewarding experience. Their high standards and creative ambition pushed my development skills to new limits, resulting in a site that is both visually unique and technically robust.
